Process service

Getting ready to have papers served

What to have ready before you call a process server, and what to expect.

1Have the basics ready

Know the type of papers, the court they come from, the general area where the person can be found, and your deadline for service.

2Ask how attempts and proof work

Ask how many attempts are included, how you will be updated, and when you will receive the signed proof of service. Rules vary, so confirm requirements with the court clerk or your attorney.

3A note on outcomes

This guide is general information, not legal advice. Nobody can promise that a person will be served by a certain date, or that a court will accept service.
